Au cœur du cimetière forestier de Riga, Tesselle imagine un rituel funéraire reliant mémoire individuelle et collective. Une procession mène du columbarium sombre à un espace lumineux où un fragment symbolique, inspiré des motifs lettons, s’intègre à une fresque vivante, où lumière et ombres racontent le souvenir.

At the heart of Riga’s forest cemetery, Tesselle envisions a funeral ritual that connects individual and collective memory. A procession leads from the dark columbarium to a luminous space where a symbolic fragment, inspired by Latvian patterns, becomes part of a living mural. Light and shadow together evoke the act of remembrance.

Par la spatialisation du rituel, l’architecture rend possible un rapport à la mort, qui se veut tangible et serein. L’architecture agit ici comme un passeur : elle assemble les mémoires individuelles pour les inscrire dans une fresque collective, en constante évolution.

Through the spatialization of ritual, architecture enables a tangible and peaceful relationship with death. Here, architecture acts as a mediator, gathering individual memories and weaving them into a collective mural in constant evolution.

La procession commence dans l’espace du columbarium, où l’urne est déposée, et se poursuit dans l’espace de la fresque, où un fragment symbolique est replacé, formant un nouveau tissage de la mémoire. Ce rituel propose un passage du sombre vers la lumière, du minéral vers l’éthéré, de l’individuel vers le collectif.

The procession begins in the columbarium, where the urn is placed, and continues into the mural space, where a symbolic fragment is inserted, forming a new weaving of memory. This ritual marks a passage from darkness to light, from the mineral to the ethereal, from the individual to the collective.

L’ombre des fragments, projetée au sol, devient une trace sensible du passage. Le sol ondulant, les bancs intégrés et la lumière filtrée forment un paysage en constante mutation. La lumière sculpte l’espace : dans le columbarium, elle filtre par des ouvertures vers le ciel. Dans l’espace de la fresque, elle baigne le sol de motifs mouvants.

The shadows of the fragments, cast on the ground, become a tangible trace of passage. The undulating floor, integrated benches, and filtered light create a constantly evolving landscape. Light sculpts the space: in the columbarium, it filters through openings to the sky. In the mural space, it bathes the floor with shifting patterns.

Le système de fragments permet à chacun de contribuer au tissage commun, quel que soit le contexte culturel ou religieux. Le geste est intuitif et participatif : le fragment est inséré, sans outil, comme une douce offrande au collectif.

The fragment system allows everyone to contribute to the shared weaving, regardless of cultural or religious background. The gesture is intuitive and participatory: the fragment is inserted by hand, without tools, as a gentle offering to the collective.
